Tell That!
D.T. Niles defined evangelism as “one beggar telling another beggar where to get food.” Delos Miles believes this vignette is based on 2 Kings 7.
As four leprous men entered the abandoned Syrian camp, they found food. They stuffed themselves full and hid some more. Then they said, “We are not doing right. This day is a day of good news, and we remain silent. If we wait until morning light, some punishment will come upon us. Now therefore, come, let us go and tell the king’s household.” (2 Kings 7:9) Every believer is a beggar who has discovered the Bread of Life. If we enjoy this “bread” without offering it to other starving beggars, we are not doing right. As Christians, we are called to witness to the faith we have in the Lord. Don’t make evangelism into some specialized task that only trained experts can perform. Simply tell what happened to you. Jesus sent the Gaderene demoniac home with the words, “Return to your own house, and tell what great things God has done for you.” (Luke 8:39) There are so many who need the good news of eternal life in Christ. The old hymn states it well, “What a wonderful change in my life has been wrought since Jesus came into my heart. I have light in my soul for which long I have sought, since Jesus came into my heart.” So, what do you tell? Did you come to realize the fact of your own sin? Did you see your lost state? Did you understand your destiny of eternal punishment in hell, totally separate from God? Did you comprehend God’s love for you that caused Christ to die to save you from hell and give you eternal life? Did you confess your sins and seek God’s forgiveness? Did you ask Jesus Christ to be your personal Savior and invite Him to come into your heart and rule your life as your Lord? Do you now have the hope of heaven when you die? Tell that!
