Do You Love Jesus?
Do you really love Jesus? Scripture clearly demonstrates that there are four basic disciplines that every Christian is to have in his or her life. They are worship, prayer, study and giving. God’s Word further reveals that these disciplines are to be exercised both privately and publicly. Why?
First, practicing our religious disciplines privately develops a sincere relationship with Jesus Christ. When we relate to the Lord without others watching, true intimacy develops. A love for the One who loved us with His very life flowers into full bloom. Second, practicing our religious disciplines publicly keeps us accountable to the body of Christ. In addition, public Christian activities allow for the benefit of the ministry of other believers. The Holy Spirit operates individually and corporately. He works directly in the heart of a single believer to accomplish God’s will in that life. He also works among and through a group of Christians gathered as a local church. Worship of God is the appropriate response to His act of love in redeeming our souls by Jesus Christ. Prayer is the intimate communication between God and man that is available to Christians. It is useful for personal fellowship with the Lord and for the ministry of intercession on behalf of others. Study of God’s Word is critical in order to know Him. King Solomon wrote, “The fear of the LORD is the beginning of wisdom, and the knowledge of the Holy One is understanding.” (Proverbs 9:10) It is not possible to develop an intimate relationship with someone without getting to know him. As we learn of a person, we gain an understanding of why he operates the way he does. Giving is the vehicle God uses to finance His ministries in accomplishing His plans. Regular giving is also a reminder that the Lord is God and we as Christians are His faithful servants.
