There had been no resistance to the Christians by the Jews. Acts 2:47 reads, “having favor with all the people.” It changed in the 4th chapter. The resistance was not with the people or the ruling Romans—Who came against them?
Three realities of the gospel ministry can be seen in this text. First, opposition often comes from inside the church, v. 1 … “as they spoke to the people, the priests, the captain of the temple, and the Sadducees came upon them,” Who came? History records that much persecution and opposition of believers comes by other religious leaders. Why? There are 3 types of people in church: the natural man, the spiritual man, and the carnal man. See 1 Corinthians 2:13-3:4. The spiritual man doesn’t bring opposition. When he discerns it spiritually, he gets on board. The natural man doesn’t usually care about what is happening. The carnal man is generally the opposition. He is a Christian, but lives like an unbeliever. It’s hard to tell them apart. People on fire for Christ are ready for change; the immature don’t like change because the rituals and environment are their only religious experience. Anyone who threatens their comfort must be stopped. Second, opposition usually comes from compromised leaders, vv. 2-3 … “being greatly disturbed that they taught the people and preached in Jesus the resurrection.” Change was undesirable because if you just paid your taxes the Romans left you alone. Today the church has leaders who enjoy their status and will deal severely with any threats to it. Third, opposition is helpless in stopping God’s plan, v. 4 … “many of those who heard the word believed.” Despite the adversities, Peter’s sermon was a success, and the church grew. The Sadducees tried to stop the apostles’ witness but failed. The gospel message was changing lives. And the question posed to the Jews that day is the same question for you today. Essentially, have you come out of your ignorance? Have you chosen Jesus? Will you surrender to Him sacrificially?
